Jubilee of St. Francis
August 11, 2026
$89
This Franciscan Jubilee Year, considered a gift for the entire Church and an occasion for authentic spiritual renewal, is an excellent time to join us for a 1 Day Bus trip to 2 Franciscan Shrines. We will spend the day learning about the life of St. Francis of Assisi. Known as the patron saint of Italy, St. Francis was a 13th-century Italian friar and founder of the Franciscan orders. He is known for his devotion to poverty, nature, and peace, and is the patron saint of animals and the environment.
We will have the opportunity to obtain plenary indulgences – a special grace of God’s mercy – under the usual conditions: sacramental confession, detachment from sin, Communion, and prayer for the intentions of the pope, by making a pilgrimage to any Franciscan conventual church or place of worship dedicated to St. Francis anywhere in the world.
This is the 800th anniversary of the saint’s Transitus to Heaven. Pope Leo (Jan. 10, 2026–Jan. 10, 2027) to mark the 800th anniversary of the saint’s death. Centered on peace, the jubilee urges believers to emulate St. Francis, particularly in caring for the poor and the environment.
Morning
We depart St. Mary Magdalene Parish by bus at 7:30 am for the Shrine of Our Lady Comforter of The Afflicted in Youngstown Ohio. The Franciscan Shrine of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted in Youngstown, Ohio was dedicated on October 4, 1964, by Bishop Walsh.
Founded by Hungarian Franciscan friars fleeing communist Transylvania in 1957, the shrine serves as a center for pilgrimage, prayer, and a memorial to Hungarian faith under persecution.
Here we will celebrate a private mass, pray the Iron Curtain Stations of the cross, and visit the gift shop.
Afternoon
After we spend time in fellowship for a sit down lunch, we will visit Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio. It is here where we will see the replica of The Portiuncula Chapel at Franciscan University of Steubenville, a faithful replica of the 13th-century chapel in Assisi, Italy. This is where St. Francis of Assisi lived, founded the Franciscan Order, and died.
The replica, completed in 1987 on the university campus, it serves as a center for prayer and Eucharistic adoration.
You will have the chance to receive a Plenary Indulgence as well as visit the school’s amazing bookstore/gift shop.

We will also visit first outdoor creche (nativity) in the United States, located in Steubenville.
Refreshments will be served on the bus ride home and we will return to St. Mary Magdalene by 6pm.
